How do I create a HMRC Government Gateway account?

If you don't have a HMRC account, you'll need to create this before connecting it to Konfir.

Updated over 3 weeks ago

To connect your HMRC account with Konfir, you’ll need a Government Gateway account. Everyone who has worked and paid tax in the UK for more than 3 months has one, but if you haven’t logged in before, you will need to create your login details.

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Visit Login Page: Either within the Konfir process or directly on the HMRC website (here), navigate to the login screen for your Government Gateway account

  2. Create Sign in Details: If you are asked if you have a Government Gateway ID, Select “No”. Otherwise, simply navigate to the ‘Create sign in details’ option at the bottom of the sign in page

4. Enter Code: Keeping the HMRC tab open, now check the email you just entered for a confirmation code. If you can't find it in your inbox, check your spam/junk folder. Copy the code and return back to HMRC. Enter the code and click Confirm. You should now see that your email address has been confirmed

5. Enter your Name: Make sure this is your full, legal name.

6. Create your Password: This will be the password that you can then use to login to your HMRC Government Gateway account. Your password needs to be 10 or more characters. Be sure to keep it safe!

8. Select Account Type: Choose the type of account you are creating. For the purposes of verifying your employment and/or income, and for all other personal matters you will want to create an Individual account.

9. Set up Security: As a final step, you will now need to set up additional security measures to protect your account. Click on Continue, then select which method you prefer to receive your security access codes. You will need an access code most times you log in to your HMRC account. Receiving via text is often the easiest method, but if you have an authenticator app this is recommended. Select Continue.

10. Return to Login: That’s it! You can now return to the original link you received from Konfir via email or SMS and connect your HMRC account by using the newly created Government Gateway ID and password.
