Summary

To access your HMRC personal tax account, you sign in using either Government Gateway credentials or GOV.UK One Login. If you don't have either, you can create sign-in details directly from the HMRC sign-in page when Konfir redirects you there.

What you'll need

  • A personal email address

  • Your National Insurance number - find it on a payslip, P45, or a letter from HMRC or DWP

  • UK proof of identity: a UK Passport, UK Driving Licence, or Northern Ireland Passport Card

Step by step

1. Go to HMRC's sign in page

When Konfir redirects you to HMRC, you'll see the option to "Create new sign in details". Select this and follow the prompts.

2. Enter your email address

Use an email address you have access to. HMRC will send a confirmation link to verify it.

2. Create a password

Create a strong password. HMRC will ask you to confirm it.

4. Save your Government Gateway ID

You’ll be shown a 12-digit Government Gateway ID — make a note of it. You’ll need this ID and your password to log in again later.

5. Choose your account type

When asked which type of tax account you’d like to create, select “Individual.”
This is the correct option for personal PAYE and employment use.

6. Set up security

Add your phone number and choose how you’d like to receive access codes (by text message or authenticator app).

7. Verify your identity

Confirm your details by providing your National Insurance number, date of birth, and other personal information about your income or employment.

8. Return to Konfir

Once your account is created, go back to your Konfir link and connect HMRC using your new credentials.

Troubleshooting

Confirmation email not received
Check your spam folder. Wait a few minutes and restart the process if required.

Identity can't be verified

Try again with a different ID document. If it still fails, use HMRC's problems signing in page for further guidance.

Don't have a UK ID document

Contact HMRC; they may be able to verify you by other means. If not, you'll need to skip the HMRC connection step.

Don't know your NI number

Use Find your National Insurance number.
