How does the payroll connection work?

Konfir automatically looks up your payroll record in the background - no login required, and your employer is never notified.

Summary

Konfir uses a payroll connection to confirm your current or recent employment directly from your employer's payroll records, without your employer being contacted or notified.

Unlike HMRC and bank connections, you don't log in to anything. Once you give consent, Konfir runs a background lookup against major payroll provider networks using the details it already has about you (such as your name and date of birth).

What you might be asked to provide

Konfir usually has enough information to run the lookup without asking for anything extra. Occasionally, if the details it holds aren't sufficient to match your record precisely, it may ask you to confirm:

  • Your National Insurance number - to uniquely identify your record

  • Your home address - to help narrow the match if there are multiple results

Neither of these is shared with your employer or verifier beyond what's needed for the lookup.

If you can't connect

If it still won't connect, skip this source and continue with your other available data sources - you can still submit your verification. Your verifier will review the result and let you know if they need anything further.

FAQs

Will my employer know I've done this?

No. The lookup goes to the payroll provider network, not your employer directly. Your employer is not notified and nothing appears in their systems.

Do I need to know which payroll system my employer uses?

No. Konfir handles the lookup automatically - you don't need to select or identify a provider.

Does payroll replace HMRC or bank?

No, they're complementary. Connecting multiple sources gives your verifier the most complete picture.

What if my employer isn't covered?

The lookup simply won't return a result - you won't see an error, it just won't connect. Skip it and use other sources. See: My payroll connection won't complete
