Summary
This message means you've tried to log in with a business, organisation, or tax agent account. Konfir's request must be approved through your personal (Individual/PAYE) HMRC account - the one linked to your own tax and income records. If you log in with a business or agent account, HMRC blocks access because those accounts don't hold your personal data.
ℹ️ Note: You may have accessed a tax agent account if you have an accountant. The account they use to manage your records on your behalf can't authorise access requests like Konfir's - only your personal account can do this.
How to fix it
Sign out of HMRC completely
Return to your Konfir link and select Connect with HMRC
Sign in using your personal (Individual/PAYE) Government Gateway credentials - not your business or agent account
Retry the connection
If you don't have a personal Government Gateway login, you can create one by following our guide: How do I create a Government Gateway account?
Looking for an alternative? Skip HMRC.
If your HMRC account remains locked or recovery is taking too long, you can continue your verification by:
Skipping HMRC in your Konfir journey.
Connecting other available sources, such as Banking or Payroll.
Submitting your verification once done.
Your verifier will review what’s been verified and contact you if any further evidence is required.
ℹ️ Note: If HMRC is your only data source and you can’t access your account, you won’t be able to complete your verification through Konfir right now. Contact your verifier - they may be able to continue your process manually outside of Konfir.
