Summary

This message means you’ve tried to log in with a business, organisation, or tax-agent account.

Konfir’s request must be approved through your personal (Individual/PAYE) HMRC account - the one linked to your own tax and income records. If you log in with a business or agent account, HMRC blocks access because those accounts don’t hold your personal data.

Note: You may have accessed a tax agent account if you have an accountant. The tax agent account you've logged into is the one they use to manage your records on your behalf, but can't authorise access requests like ours.

How to fix it

  1. Sign out of HMRC completely.

  2. Return to your Konfir link and choose Connect with HMRC.

  3. Sign in using your personal (Individual/PAYE) Government Gateway credentials.

  4. Retry - Once set up, return to your Konfir link and connect HMRC again.

If you don’t have a personal login, create one by following our guide: How do I create a Government Gateway account?

If you still can’t resolve this

If you’re still having trouble or don’t yet have a personal HMRC account:

  • Skip the HMRC step for now and connect any other available sources - like Banking or Payroll - before submitting your verification.

  • If HMRC is your only available source, contact your verifier (the organisation that requested your check). They can continue your verification manually using documents such as payslips or references.
