I’m locked out of my HMRC account

If you’re locked out of HMRC, reset your account or wait 24 hours. You can skip HMRC and continue with other sources, or contact your verifier if none are available.

Summary

If you’ve been locked out of your HMRC (Government Gateway) account, don’t worry - accounts are typically unlocked within 24 hours, or you can reset your access straight away using HMRC’s recovery steps.

When your access is restored, simply return to your Konfir link and reconnect HMRC to continue your verification.

How to regain access

  1. Go to the HMRC sign-in page and select “Problems signing in?”

  2. Follow the recovery steps to reset your password or unlock your account.

  3. If you can’t reset it online, contact HMRC support for help.
You can reach them via the HMRC help and support page.

Once your account is active again, return to your Konfir link to complete the HMRC connection.

What to do while you wait

If your HMRC account remains locked or recovery is taking too long, you can continue your verification by:

  • Skipping HMRC in your Konfir journey.

  • Connecting other available sources, such as Banking or Payroll.

  • Submitting your verification once done.

Your verifier will review what’s been verified and contact you if any further evidence is required.

If no other sources are available

If HMRC is your only data source and you can’t access your account, you won’t be able to complete your verification through Konfir right now.

Please contact your verifier (the organisation that requested your check). They can continue your process manually - for example, by reviewing payslips, P60s, or references instead.
