Summary

An SA302 is an official HMRC document that shows your income and tax for a specific tax year. It's produced when you file a Self Assessment tax return and is the standard document used to verify self-employment income.

What an SA302 shows

An SA302 includes the tax year it covers, your total income from self-employment (and any other sources), your tax calculation for that year, and confirmation that you filed a Self Assessment return. It doesn't include bank statements, individual invoices, or client details.

How to download your SA302 from HMRC

You can download your SA302 directly from your HMRC online account.

  1. Log in to your HMRC online account

  2. Select ‘Self Assessment' > 'Tax Years'

  3. Select the relevant tax year(s) - you should do this for each tax year that you were self-employed, or that you have a document for.

  4. Select 'Print'

  5. Save as PDF to your device

FAQs

How many years do I need to upload?

Your verifier specifies this - typically 1–3 years of SA302s for self-employment verification. Check your verification for any specific guidance.

Can I use an SA302 from my accountant?

No. Konfir only accepts SA302 documents downloaded directly from your HMRC online account. Versions generated by accounting software (Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent, and others) aren't accepted, even if they look the same.

I don't file Self Assessment - will I have an SA302?

No. SA302s are only available if you've filed a Self Assessment return. If you're employed and don't file Self Assessment, you won't have one. See I don't have an SA302 - what should I do?

My SA302 isn't showing in my HMRC account - what should I do?

If your SA302 isn't visible, visit https://www.gov.uk/self-assessment-tax-returns/overview for guidance on accessing your Self Assessment records. If you filed through an accountant, they can confirm whether a return was submitted for that year.
