Summary

Konfir’s HMRC connection lets you verify your employment and income securely using data held by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). This data comes directly from your PAYE (Pay As You Earn) record - the same source employers use to report tax and income details to the UK Government.

The process is fast, secure, and fully under your control. You sign in directly with your Government Gateway account, approve a one-time connection, and your data is shared instantly with Konfir for verification.

Step-by-step: connecting HMRC

  1. Sign in to HMRC

    • You’ll be redirected to HMRC’s website to log in with your Government Gateway ID and password.

    • If you don’t yet have an account, you can create one during this step.

  2. Verify your identity

    • HMRC may ask you to confirm two of the following:

      • UK photocard driving licence

      • UK passport

      • non-UK passport with a biometric chip

      • UK biometric residence permit (BRP)

      • UK biometric residence card (BRC)

      • UK Frontier Worker permit (FWP)

  3. Approve access

    • HMRC will ask you to approve a one-time data access request from Konfir.

    • Once approved, you’ll automatically return to Konfir — there’s nothing else to do.

That’s it. The connection lasts just a few seconds and closes automatically once your verification is complete.

Who can connect to HMRC?

You can connect if:

  • You’ve worked or paid tax in the UK for at least 3 months, and

  • You have (or can create) a Government Gateway account.

If you haven’t worked or paid tax in the UK recently, or your employment was overseas, skip the HMRC step and use other sources such as Banking or Payroll.

What data is shared

When you connect HMRC, Konfir receives the PAYE income information stored on your tax record, including:

  • Employer names

  • Start and end dates

  • Income details (gross and PAYE)

  • Employment status history (up to 5 years)

Not shared: personal tax calculations, self-assessment data, or any unrelated information from your HMRC account.

Why Konfir uses HMRC data

HMRC data is the most authoritative, tamper-proof source for verifying UK employment and income. It is:

  • 🏛️ Official – sourced directly from employer-submitted PAYE records.

  • 🔒 Secure – managed through your own Government Gateway login.

  • 🕰️ Comprehensive – covers up to five years of employment history.

  • Trusted – cannot be edited or falsified.

Using HMRC reduces the need for manual references or document uploads, helping complete your verification faster.

Security and privacy

  • The connection uses HMRC’s own secure API.

  • You log in directly with HMRC - Konfir never sees or stores your login details.

  • Access is one-time and read-only:

    • We can’t make changes to your HMRC account.

    • We can’t reconnect or access data again later.

  • You can review and remove HMRC permissions anytime by logging in to your Government Gateway account.

💡 You stay in control at all times - nothing is shared without your consent, and access closes automatically after use.

Who can connect HMRC?

Everyone who has worked in the UK for more than 3 months can connect HMRC data via their Government Gateway account. If you have not accessed your account before, you will need to create your login details.

If you haven’t worked/paid tax in the UK for more than 3 months, you should skip HMRC connection.
