Summary

Konfir’s HMRC connection lets you verify your employment and income securely using data held by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). This data comes directly from your PAYE (Pay As You Earn) record - the same source employers use to report tax and income details to the UK Government.

The process is fast, secure, and fully under your control. You sign in directly with your Government Gateway account, approve a one-time connection, and your data is shared instantly with Konfir for verification.

Step-by-Step: How to Connect

  1. Sign in to HMRC

    • You’ll be redirected to HMRC’s website to log in with your Government Gateway ID and password.

    • If you don’t yet have an account, you can create one during this step.

  2. Verify your identity

    • HMRC may ask you to confirm two of the following:

      • UK photocard driving licence

      • UK passport

      • non-UK passport with a biometric chip

      • UK biometric residence permit (BRP)

      • UK biometric residence card (BRC)

      • UK Frontier Worker permit (FWP)

  3. Approve access

    • HMRC will ask you to approve a one-time data access request from Konfir.

    • Once approved, you’ll automatically return to Konfir — there’s nothing else to do.

That’s it. The connection lasts just a few seconds and closes automatically once your verification is complete.

Who can connect?

You can connect if:

  • You’ve worked or paid tax in the UK for at least 3 months, and

  • You have (or can create) a Government Gateway account.

💡 Tip: If these do not apply to you, please skip the HMRC step and connect any other available data sources

What data is shared?

When you connect HMRC, Konfir receives the PAYE income information stored on your tax record, including:

  • Employer names

  • Start and end dates

  • Income details (gross and PAYE)

  • Employment status history (up to 5 years)

Not shared: personal tax calculations, self-assessment data, or any unrelated information from your HMRC account.

Why does Konfir use HMRC data?

HMRC data is the most authoritative, tamper-proof source for verifying UK employment and income. It is:

  • 🏛️ Official – sourced directly from employer-submitted PAYE records.

  • 🔒 Secure – managed through your own Government Gateway login.

  • 🕰️ Comprehensive – covers up to five years of employment history.

  • Trusted – cannot be edited or falsified.

Using HMRC reduces the need for manual references or document uploads, helping complete your verification faster.

Security and privacy

  • Official method - The connection uses HMRC’s own secure API, for which Konfir is a registered user

  • One-time access - Access is automatically closed within seconds, and we can’t reconnect or access data again later without you consent.

  • Restricted Access - Access is read-only, meaning we can’t make changes to your HMRC account.

  • No sharing logins - As you log in with HMRC directly, Konfir never sees or stores your login details

💡 Tip: You can use HMRC's guide to confirm that Konfir's access has been automatically removed.
