I don’t have an SA302 - what should I do?

Summary

You’ll only have an SA302 if you’ve already completed a Self Assessment tax return with HMRC. This typically applies to sole traders, freelancers and limited company directors.

If you work through an umbrella company, agency, or are paid via PAYE, you likely won’t have SA302s - and you may be able to verify through a digital connection instead.

If you’re newly self-employed, you may not have an SA302 yet and will need to contact your verifier to arrange alternative options.

How to get your SA302

You can download your SA302 directly from your HMRC online account.

  1. Log into your HMRC online account

  2. Select ‘More Self Assessment details’, then choose ‘Tax Years’

  3. Pick the tax year/s you need to evidence

  4. Click ‘View your calculation’ or ‘SA302’

  5. Download the document/s as PDF file/s

Alternatively, your accountant or tax software provider might provide you with your SA302.

If you’re newly self-employed

You may not have an SA302 yet if:

  • You haven’t completed a full tax year

  • You haven’t submitted and paid your tax return to HMRC yet

In that case, you may want to contact the organisation requesting your verification to discuss alternative options.

Reminder

  • You’ll need to upload one SA302 per tax year for each year of your self-employment period.

  • We can’t accept SA302s for the current tax year, as they’re only generated after you’ve filed and paid your return for that year.
