I can’t verify my identity

If you can’t verify your identity with HMRC, don’t worry - you can attempt to resolve or skip the connection. In some cases, you may have to pursue alternative checks outside Konfir.

Summary

When connecting your HMRC account through Government Gateway, you may be asked to verify your identity - especially if you’ve never logged in before or haven’t done so recently.

If your ID isn’t being accepted, or you don’t have the required documents, don’t worry - this is a common issue, and there are still ways to complete your verification.

If you don’t have two forms of UK photo ID

HMRC currently requires two valid forms of UK identification (for example, a passport and driving licence) to verify your identity online.

Without these, you won’t be able to connect HMRC - but there are still options to move forward.

  1. Skip & continue with other available sources.
Skip HMRC. If you see Banking or Payroll options in Konfir, you can connect those instead before submitting your verification. Your verifier will review the results and follow up if they need anything else.

  2. Contact your verifier
If your verifier has not enabled other sources (e.g. Banking or Payroll) then you won’t be able to complete your verification through Konfir. Contact your verifier to continue the process manually - they may ask for payslips, P60s, or other documents instead.

Note: Your Konfir verification will automatically close, and your verifier will handle the rest of your process directly. Manual verification may take longer but won’t affect your overall application

If you have ID but still can’t verify

If HMRC rejects your passport, driving licence, or other details, it usually means the information HMRC holds doesn’t exactly match your documents (for example, your name, date of birth, or address).

  1. Contact HMRC to update your records:
You can do this via the support links on their sign-in page or their HMRC help and support page. Once updated, you’ll be able to access your account for future use.

  2. Complete your verification:
If you have access to Banking or Payroll, skip HMRC and connect those instead.
If you don’t have other options, contact your verifier so they can complete your check manually (e.g., via document review or referencing).

Note: Your Konfir verification will automatically close, and your verifier will handle the rest of your process directly. Manual verification may take longer but won’t affect your overall application
