Summary
You can create your Government Gateway login during the Konfir flow or directly on HMRC’s site: start from the sign-in page, choose Create sign in details, verify your email, set a password, note your Government Gateway ID, choose Individual account, and set up 2-step security. Then return to your Konfir link to connect.
Step-by-step
1. Start
On the HMRC sign-in page, select ‘Create sign in details’.
Note: Make sure you have your National Insurance Number to hand before proceeding.
2. Verify your email
You’ll be prompted to enter your email address. You’ll then receive a verification code. Once you’ve entered that code and it has been accepted, click ‘Continue’.
3. Enter your name & create password
You’ll then be asked your full name, and be prompted to set a strong password (10 characters or more)
4. Save your Government Gateway user ID
You’ll now be presented with your Government Gateway user ID; a 12-digit number that you can use to sign into Government Gateway with the password you’ve just set.
5. Confirm ‘Individual’ account type
You’ll now be asked to choose which type of tax account you’d like to create. Select Choose Individual as the account type for personal PAYE use.
6. Set up security
You’ll be asked to set up some extra security measures to make sure only you are able to sign in, including providing your phone number and letting HMRC know how you want to be sent access codes (text or authenticator app).
7. Verify yourself
You’re almost there! You’ll now be asked for personal identification information such as your National Insurance number, birth date and other details about your income and employment status.
8. Return to Konfir
You’re all set! Return to your Konfir link and connect HMRC using your new credentials.
