How do Konfir verifications work?

See how a Konfir verification works from start to finish - what you’ll be asked to connect, why, and how your data is handled.

Summary

Konfir verifies your employment or income by connecting securely to trusted sources like HMRC, your bank, or payroll.

You’re brought into Konfir from a process you’re already doing (like employment screening, tenant referencing, or a finance application), then you choose which available sources to connect. Konfir’s verification engine automatically turns that data into a factual record for the organisation that requested your check (your verifier).

The Konfir journey in 5 steps

1️⃣ You’re sent to Konfir by your verifier (from their process)

Most people reach Konfir as part of something they’re already doing, such as:

  • Completing employment screening for a new job

  • Going through tenant referencing for a rental

  • Applying for a loan, credit, or other financial product

In these cases, you’ll usually:

  • Click a button or link inside your verifier’s own website or app, or

  • Receive a secure Konfir link by email or SMS from

Either way, that link/session is unique to you and tied to the verification your verifier has created. You don’t need to set anything up yourself.

2️⃣ You see who’s asking and what’s needed

When you open your link, you’ll see:

  • Who your verifier is (name and logo)

  • A short explanation of what you’re being asked to verify (employment and/or income)

  • The data sources your verifier has enabled for this check (for example, HMRC, Banking, Payroll)

You won’t always see all three - your verifier chooses which options are available for your situation.

3️⃣ You choose which data sources to connect

Konfir may offer one or more of the following:

  • HMRC – confirms PAYE employment and income from your Government Gateway account

  • Banking (Open Banking) – confirms income paid into a bank account you own

  • Payroll – confirms employment and salary details directly from an employer’s payroll system

You give consent separately for each source. In many cases, you can skip one source and continue with others (for example, skip Banking and use HMRC).

For deeper explanations of each source, see:

4️⃣ You connect securely through each provider

When you choose a source:

  • For HMRC – you’re redirected to the Government Gateway website to sign in and approve access.

  • For Banking – you’re redirected to your bank’s app or website to sign in and approve an Open Banking connection.

  • For Payroll – in many cases you don’t need to log in; consent is enough for Konfir to retrieve records from your employer’s payroll provider.

In all cases:

  • You sign in directly with the provider, not with Konfir.

  • Konfir never sees or stores your passwords.

  • Connections are one-time and read-only and close automatically after your data is retrieved.

If you run into issues or can’t connect everything, see:

5️⃣ Konfir builds your verification & sends it to your verifier

Once your data is connected, Konfir’s verification engine:

  • Collects only the data you’ve consented to share

  • Cross-checks employers, dates, job titles (if available) and income across sources

  • Builds a standardised, tamper-resistant verification of your employment and/or income

This usually happens in seconds. There’s no manual review by Konfir and no need to upload documents into Konfir.

When it’s done, your verification is:

  • Shared securely with your verifier

  • Marked as complete in your Konfir journey

From that point on, your verifier manages the process and will contact you if they need anything else.
